Girl Swinging in Blue to Meg Myers Desire
Sunday night markedMeghan Trainor's first time at the Billboard Music Awards, and not only did she perform, but she also won two trophies, for her mega-hit "All About that Bass." The singer/songwriter told ABC Radio backstage that the awards are "everything" to her. "I remember seeing the song climb the Billboard charts, and all I wanted was to be a songwriter on the Billboard charts. And the fact that it was up there for so long, and everyone kept relating to the message...that was the goal. And to be awarded for it is just like, 'Alright, you did something magical here!"
On the telecast, Megan performed the song "Like I'm Gonna Lose You," her next single, with John Legend, who also joins her on the album. "We only sang it one other time...and this was the first 'on TV' time so I was nervous. I was very nervous," she told ABC Radio. "And [John] made me feel comfortable, and the crowd was great, and it felt powerful."
Hozier took home two trophies for his hit "Take Me to Church," which he also performed during the show. Backstage, he said his reaction to the win, which marks the song's success on the charts, was one of "disbelief." "For me, the music, I never imagined that it would have chart success, in the way that it has, so for me it kind of solidifies that, in a way....I can't be in disbelief anymore. But it feels amazing and I'm really, really encouraged." The Irish singer/songwriter also said he was looking forward to partying with his buddy Ed Sheeran after the show.
Florida Georgia Line, who were named Top Country Act, also told ABC Radio said they were most looking forward to partying with Ed Sheeran. Though the country duo and the British singer/songwriter seem an unlikely pair, it turns out that they've already had some wild times together in the past. "He's the man. We've had some good times with him before, so we know what to expect," FGL's Brian Kelley told ABC Radio. His bandmate Tyler Hubbard added, "When we hang out with Ed...we just have a good time. We dance, we rap, we sing, we play around, we take shots, whatever. It's always fun...Ed's a great dude!"
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Van Halen performed their classic hit "Panama" on the show, but backstage, frontman David Lee Roth told reporters that doing TV events like this was something they'd always shied away from in the past. "We always stayed away from televison because of the sound difficulties, and we are particular to the way that we are photographed and recorded [by others], because we always did it ourselves," he noted. Van Halen kick off a North American tour at the beginning of July.
During the telecast, rapper Wiz Khalifa teamed with singer Charlie Puth for a live rendition of their touching hit "See You Again" which has been #1 for five weeks. The song is a tribute to the late actor Paul Walker, a star of the Fast & Furious franchise, and it's the closing song of Furious 7, the most recent installment in the franchise. Actor/singer Tyrese Gibson, a star of Furious 7, helped introduce the performance, and backstage, he told ABC Radio his thoughts about the song.
"I mean, it's a very touching and moving record, and I think the timing around the release, the fact that it's the last song you hear in Furious 7, I mean, t was bound to be a hit," Gibson said. "Because I believe in the marriage of music and art and if you can have a song, and the images that are showing up in reflection of the song, that marriage is always a winning combination."
Celine Dion, who'll be returning to her Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace August 27 after taking time off to care for her ailing husband, told ABC Radio backstage that she's thrilled at the influx of new performers in town.Britney Spears' residency is a hit, Mariah Carey just launched hers, and Jennifer Lopez will start doing on next year.
"Girl power! Let's go! We're ready for this!" Celine told ABC Radio. " I believed in this place for so long. People thought, 'She's gonna finish her career in Las Vegas, this is the beginning of the end.' You know the rest: we've been here for 12 years; it's been giving me so many wonderful nights and wonderful ways of raising my kids, and being stable at the house and give the best as an artist onstage...listen: this is the new capital of show business. This is the place to be!"
